COURSE TITLE: Social Psychology

COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to the relationship between individuality and social context. The course covers the history of the field and its relationship to sociology. Classic social psychological experiments will be reviewed and current research and trends explored. Topics include: social cognition and perception, authority and obedience, conformity, the self, attitudes and prejudice, attraction, aggression, and altruism.

Same as PSYC 340.

Prerequisites: PSYC 250 or 251 or 3 credits of SOCI at the introductory level
REQUIRED TEXTS: Required readings will be posted on Moodle with each course topic. There is no textbook in this class. The readings will be secondary (textbook type readings) and primary (research articles) and will cover part of the content for each unit. Other elements of the content will be presented in class. All posted readings will be posted with permission granted under Access Copyright. The end result of reading all the posted readings is that you will have read content very similar to that presented in a single textbook on social psychology. Please see my (very long) rationale for this choice posted on Moodle.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the successful completion of this course the student:
  • will have a solid background in the major principles and theories of social psychology.
  • will have knowledge of how these principles and theories can be applied to everyday life.
  • will be able to think critically about the major themes in social psychology, and will have been exposed to research data and research methods that are used in the sub-discipline of social psychology.
  • will be able to articulate issues relevant to the integration of social psychology and a Christian worldview.
