COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The acquisition of vocal technique in a large ensemble setting; the study and performance of choral repertoire. Participation in annual choir tour is required.

Prerequisites: MUSI 210

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

1.) Music
There are no required textbooks for this course, nor will you have to purchase any music. Music will be loaned to you for the duration of the term. You are responsible for the care of this music. A replacement fee will be levied for lost or damaged music. Final grades will also be withheld until all music has been either returned or paid for.

2.) Black Folder
Every student must have a black folder for performances.

3.) Concert Attire
The King’s University will provide robes for you. In addition, women must wear black nylons and men must wear black socks; both men and women must wear black dress shoes (no casual shoes, boots, etc.). Men must also wear black dress pants, white shirts and a tie under their choir robe. If you have any questions or concerns, please come talk to me.

4.) Pencil
All markings in your music must be made in pencil. You must bring at least one pencil to every rehearsal. Marks will be deducted for students who do not bring pencils and who do not make suggested markings. Students may occasionally be asked to hand in their music so that the instructor can evaluate the accuracy and completeness of their markings.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The course is designed to develop choral singing techniques and a general understanding of choral music and its history. Students will further improve their sight-reading, listening skills and understanding of vocal pedagogy. The instructor will share a translation of the text as well as a rudimentary formal analysis and/or synopsis of all music covered throughout the semester. The choir will prepare and perform both accompanied and a cappella music from various centuries. Repertoire will be of differing styles and in various languages.
