COURSE TITLE: Recreation and Sport Management

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION: This course provides an overview of the basic management principles as they relate to sport enterprises and the operation of sport and recreation organizations. Functional areas of management will be highlighted including finance, marketing, human resources, and ethics. Students will explore the nature of recreation and sport from a Christian world view with an emphasis on developing effective leadership skills. Current trends and challenges in sport and recreation will also be addressed.

Prerequisites: BUSI 200 or 3 credits of kinesiology

COURSE OBJECTIVES: After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:
  • define sport management and discuss the nature and scope of opportunities in the sport industry;
  • explain the importance of a professional perspective; exhibit critical skills and attitudes
  • critically evaluate major challenges confronting various segments of the industry;
  • explain the relevance of ethical and sociological concepts to the management of sport and recreation; apply biblical priniciples
  • demonstrate an understanding of theories of management, Christian leadership, and organizational behavior and how these theories are applied in sport enterprises;
  • identify opportunities through which we may utilize our Christian faith in order to enhance our communities, youth, churches, etc.
