COURSE DESCRIPTION: |
Independent
full-year research project, carried out under the mentorship of a
faculty member or an industrial partner. This project may be an
independent research project in the laboratories at the University or a
cooperative project with another laboratory or agency. Upon completion
of the project, the results are presented in the form of a senior
thesis and a seminar. The CHEM 497 thesis research can also be carried
out in a summer of full-time research work at The King's University
laboratories or as an intern in a work-integrated learning project with
a public agency or an industrial partner.
Prerequisites: Twenty four credits in chemistry at the senior level |

The CHEM 497 final grades are arrived at in consultation with all faculty members in the Chemistry Department.
Depending on the nature of the project, individual supervisors might allocate a certain percentage to a lab/field notebook.

COURSE OUTLINE: |
- Organizational
Meeting All Biol and Chem 49x student meet to hear about the various
research projects within the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
- Signed
Contract After meeting with your supervisor and having them approve
your project, complete the contract form (on Moodle). You will have 3
copies of this form – one for you, one for your supervisor and one to
be handed in to Dr. Ooms.
- Progress Report & Literature
Review The progress report will be in the form of a 5 minute oral
presentation to a small group of other 494/497 students and one or two
faculty members. Submit your Literature Review to your supervisor.
- Interim
Report Submit this to your supervisor. This report should
include: Introduction / Background, Experimental methods, Results and
discussion of initial experiments, References. You may also be required
to submit your notebook – it will be returned within a week.
- Progress
Report The progress report will be in the form of a 5 minute oral
presentation to a small group of other 494/497 students and one or two
faculty members
- First Draft of Final Paper Submit this to your supervisor. Include the title and abstract for your project.
- Final
Paper and Presentation Submit this to your supervisor. Be sure to
include your final title, abstract and powerpoint presentation. E-mail
your title and abstract to Dr. Ooms.
- Science 49x Presentation
Day You must have your powerpoint on USB and uploaded to your room’s
computer by 8:30 am at the latest! You are responsible for ensuring
that your file is displaying properly. If using your own laptop, you
are responsible for ensuring compatibility the LCD projector.
