COURSE TITLE: Special Topics in Business - 2017/18 Winter: Entrepreneurship Study Trip

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A course on a topic of figure of special interest to a member of the business faculty and offered on a non-recurring basis.

2016/17 Winter

Entrepreneurs cross borders and companies are being born global today. This course provides a real-life experience of the opportunities and challenges of global entrepreneurship through a focused overseas study tour. The first nine-hour classes and individual meetings with the instructor will equip students with a broad understanding of international business and entrepreneurship, facilitate students to identify business opportunities and gather information. Then, with the guidance of the instructor, students will communicate with companies in Hong Kong and Shen Zhen areas in China as well as South Korea so that they could visit them. During the trip, students will further develop their business plan while learning business environments of the countries, cross-cultural communication skills, international trade issues, and different decision-making and negotiation styles. In the final part of the course, students will present and implement their global business plans.
Throughout the course, students will be challenged to look beyond traditional boundaries and critically assess alternative ways of doing business that develop innovative approaches.

Prerequisites: A minimum of 24 credits in any subject should be completed before the start of the course, and instructor permission is required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of this course, students will:
  • Explore business opportunities and challenges, and identify business items in the global context.
  • Collect up-to-date information and analyze relevant data in order to devise business strategies.
  • Demonstrate historical, political, economic and cultural knowledge specific to their area of travel and study
  • Analyze the business environment of the foreign countries
  • Understand the differences in business decision-making styles between Canada and the foreign countries.
  • Develop cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Understand business as a mission
