COURSE
DESCRIPTION: |
A course on a topic of figure of special interest to a
member of the physical education faculty and offered on a non-recurring
basis.
Prerequisites: PSYC 250 or 251
2015/16 Fall
Sport and Exercise Psychology is a course designed to introduce
students to the relationship between psychological factors and sport
and physical activity. There will be two main themes of this course -
how psychological factors influence performance and experience in sport
and physical activity and how sport and exercise influence
psychological well-being. Students will learn to apply sport psychology
theories to real situations such as coaching, sports medicine, physical
education, health promotion, and training.

- Supplemental readings: Articles will either be posted
on the Moodle course site or accessible through the library

COURSE OBJECTIVES: |
- To understand how psychological variables( eg,
motivation, personality, anxiety, focus) influence performance and
experience in sport and physical activity.
- To understand how sport and physical activity
influences psychological factors (eg, depression, anxiety, stress)
- To understand how sport psychology principles and
theories apply to professions including coaching, health promotion,
physical education and sports medicine.
- To develop written and oral skills related to the
application of sport psychology principles and theories to real world
settings
- Identify important psychological skills required for
an athlete to perform to his/her potential
- Evaluate an athlete's psychological skills and
develop a program to improve these skills
- Interpret and explain his/her own psychological test
scores and formulate a plan to develop these areas
- Assess fundamental psychological theories and
psychological constructs that relate to human behavior, human
perception/attitude, and human affective/emotional experience in sport
and physical activity settings
