DESCRIPTION: |
A course on a topic of figure of special interest to a
member of the psychology faculty and offered on a non-recurring
basis.
Prerequisites: PSYC 250 or 251
2011/12 Winter
This course uses human science, natural science, faith, and cultural
perspectives to examine research in the promotion and maintenance of
health, as well as efforts to manage illness and pain. Topics will
include stress and coping, communication in medical settings, responses
to chronic and life-threatening illness, and community-level health
promotion.

After successfully completing this course you will be
able to
- describe interactions of psychological, biological,
and social factors in health and wellness (the biopsychosocial model)
- apply the biopsychosocial model to health-related
conditions and issues
- place health psychology within the history and
development of psychology
- discuss and critically evaluate research relating to
the factors that contribute to/maintain/prevent health conditions
- relate research to problems of wellness promotion and
the treatment of illness
