Notes:

1.    All incoming music students must write the online music theory assessment. Students who do not pass the online music theory assessment must register for MUSI200: Introduction to Music Theory, in the fall term. 3.    Ensemble requirement: King’s Cantorum, King’s Chamber Singers, Opera Chorus or Instrumental Ensemble (minimum 4 terms). Students in Applied Voice may start fulfilling the choir requirement in their second year. Instrumental Ensemble requirements are met through enrollment in a University of Alberta instrumental ensemble course (e.g. University Orchestra, Academy Strings, Concert Band, Orchestral Winds, Wind Ensemble, or Jazz Band) or in a comparable university-level orchestra or ensemble.

4.    The applied credit courses in bassoon, cello, clarinet, classical accordion, classical guitar, double bass, flute, French horn, harp, harpsichord, oboe, organ, percussion, piano, recorder, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, tuba, viola, violin and voice include regular repertoire classes.   

5.    Canadian content requirement: Students in the 5xx Applied courses must include some 20th century Canadian music in their repertoire

6.    A student wishing to receive the 2-year Diploma in Church Music together with the 4-year B.A. with a major in music must fulfill the requirements of the Diploma and complete at least 9 additional music credits beyond those of the degree requirements (132 credits).

Streams

Music Education Stream

The King’s University Music Education stream prepares students to enter the B.Ed. after degree program with a solid grounding in musical skills, instrumental techniques, and pedagogy. Students planning to teach junior or senior high school music must take the 4 year BA degree with a major in music. This degree includes music history, theory, ensemble, and lessons on a primary instrument, as well as woodwind, brass, and percussion techniques, choral and instrumental conducting, and classroom methodologies. Students planning to teach elementary school music may take the 3 year BA program which focuses on the instruments and methodologies employed in the lower grades in addition to developing their own musicianship skills. Both programs provide foundations in music education philosophy, psychology, ethics, and advocacy. Both concentrations provide for the completion of a teachable minor.

A Music Education stream may start in the second or third year of study, after the student has taken MUSI216, 217, 264; MUSI 259 or 260; and 3 credits of music history at the 300-level. Recommended courses depend on whether students are planning to teach elementary or secondary music. Completing this stream requires 15 to 24 credits, so students must plan carefully to make these fit within their music electives.

Piano Pedagogy Stream

The King’s University Piano Pedagogy stream provides students with training and practical experience in the teaching of beginning and intermediate level piano students and the running of a thriving music studio. This innovative program offers pianists an opportunity to prepare for an active and rewarding career in the field of piano pedagogy as they learn to become effective teachers. The courses include practical teaching experience with mentoring, lesson observation and in-depth exploration of current materials, techniques and methods. In addition, music education, business and psychology courses complement the practical aspect of the stream.

The Piano Pedagogy stream may start in the second or third year with supporting academic courses and conclude in the fourth year with the Pedagogy and Practicum courses. Completing this stream requires 18 credits, so students must plan carefully to make these fit within their music electives.
