The Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies is accredited by Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada, the certifying body of the Canadian Environmental Accreditation Commission (CEAC).
All students in the B.A. (4-year) program must complete the King's common curriculum. Please see King’s Common-Curriculum. Please also note the more specific requirements for Environmental Studies:
•Deepening our Roots: ENVS students must take 2 of HIST359, PHIL320, and THEO370
• ENVS has two natural science cognate pathways. From those the Recognizing Creation's Story and Engaging the Creation requirements are fulfilled.
• The Human Story and Human Response items are more constrained for ENVS students, who must take ECON203 and POLI205.
Students must complete 27 credits in the Environmental Studies major consisting of ENVS 200, 300, 410, 450, 490, 491, GEOG 310, 350, and ENVS 320 or SOCI 319. In addition, one of two natural science cognate pathways must be fulfilled. Two courses from these also fulfill the Recognizing Creation's Story and Engaging the Creation requirements. The pathways are:
• Group A: 9 credits of BIOL210, 211, 330; CHEM200, 201; GEOG201 (3 in each of BIOL and CHEM)
• Group B: all of CHEM290, GEOG201, and 6 credits of BIOL210, 211, ASTR 200, 210
And the Environmental Studies major has social science cognates of ECON315 and POLI327.
Students in the B.A. Environmental Studies program must choose a subject of concentration. Subjects are available in the following:
•Biology
•Business Administration
•Chemistry
•Economics and Politics
•English
•History
•Philosophy
•Psychology
•Social Science Group
•Sociology
•Theology
No more than 6 credits of 200-level courses may be applied to meet concentration subject requirements. Certain disciplines may have special cognate requirements which a student must meet for a subject of concentration.
Internship Eligibility, Registration and Procedures |
ELIGIBILITY |
Students are eligible for an environmental internship if they have: •successfully completed year three of the Environmental Studies Program, achieved an overall GPA of 2.50, and •satisfactorily completed an interview with the Director of the Environmental Studies Program to assess progress in their program of study, ascertain preparation and readiness for an internship, and evaluate ability and commitment to completion of year four of the degree program. |
REGISTRATION |
Consent of the Director of the Environmental Studies program is needed to register in ENVS 490 (Internship). This consent is granted, or not granted, during registration in the Spring. |
PROCEDURE |
1.submit an "Application for Internship in Environmental Studies" 2.participate in year 3 program interview 3.actively search for an internship position 4.inform King's of an offer of employment 5.sign letter of agreement among student, employer and King's 6.register in ENVS 490 & 491 |
Students in the Environmental studies programs may be interested in taking courses through the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies. Please see the Au Sable website www.ausable.org or Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies for details.
